Side dishes
Plan a main dish with a side you pick each time – curry with rice one week, with naan the next.
The idea
Many dishes go with different sides: chili with rice or bread, fish with potatoes or salad. Instead of a recipe for every pair, the main dish leaves room for a side, and you pick it when you plan or shop. You need two things:
- a placeholder in the main dish, like “Rice”
- side dish recipes that fit it, like “Basmati rice” or “Fried rice”
Leave room for a side dish
- Open the main dish and press “Add Ingredient”.
- Write the kind of side as the description, like “Rice”.
- Set the unit to “fixing” and the amount to 1, and press “Save”.
- Two sides, like rice and salad? Add a placeholder for each. With 1 and 1, each covers half the servings; with 2 and 1, rice covers two thirds.
- Placeholders aren't bought: your list gets the side dish's ingredients instead.
Write a side dish recipe
- Write a recipe for the side, like “Basmati rice”.
- Tick “Fixing?” next to its name.
- Add the placeholder's name as a tag, like “Rice”, and press “Save”.
- Upper and lower case, spaces and dashes don't matter: the tag “basmati-rice” fits the placeholder “Basmati Rice”.
- Tag several side dishes “Rice”, and you pick one each time.
How the amounts are worked out
Greezy scales the side to the servings you cook. Say a curry has the placeholder “Rice” and the rice recipe is for 2 servings: cook the curry for 4, and you get the rice recipe twice.
With two placeholders, “Rice” and “Salad” at 1 each, each side covers half: for 4 servings, 2 of rice and 2 of salad.
Pick the side dish
Wherever you plan a main dish – in a recipe group or on a shopping list – Greezy asks you to pick its sides from the side dishes tagged with the placeholder's name.
- A recipe group saves once every placeholder has a side; missing ones turn red.
- Nothing to pick? Write a side dish recipe with the placeholder's name as a tag.
- Your list of recipes hides side dishes until you tick “Show Fixings”.
